My Top 5 Lake District Landscape Photography Locations

Tarn hows Low Res-1.jpg

#5 Tarn Hows

Potentially the most visited location in the whole of the Lake District. Tarn Hows has everything for a landscape photographer - vistas, woodland, waterfalls, foreground galore, oh, and it's within a few seconds walk from the car park! What's great about this spot is that you're already quite high up by the time you've parked up. Take the circular route around the tarn itself and this will no doubt become a favourite photography spot!

#4 Buttermere

Buttermere is a fantastic location to head with your camera - definitely one of the best. I'd highly recommend the flat, accessible loop track around the lake itself. You'll have constant vistas of the surrounding Fells and plenty of foreground to play around with. A couple of popular shots are looking back towards Haystacks. You have 'THE' lone tree at the north-western shores of the lake - and then further round there's a wonderful collection of trees protruding outwards in a perfect spot! These make for a great shot with the telephoto lens.

#3 Loughrigg Fell

Loughrigg Fell sits in the Central Lake District - which means that despite its modest height, the surrounding views are absolutely magnificent. The hike to the top isn't too difficult and it's one of those where the views just get better and better by the minute. I think it's best accessed from the Grasmere (Lake) side, as Loughrigg Terrace rewards one of my favourite Lake Distrcit vistas.

#2 Holme Fell

Holme Fell really is one of those locations that seems to have it all. I can guarantee if you've never been here before, you'll absolutely adore it. It has its own charm throughout all four seasons and to top it off, the hike is pretty easy too! The Fell itself is more of an expanse of different crags which means it plateaus - perfect for us landscape photographers that enjoy scouring for foreground elements. The views back to the Langdale Pikes are some of the best.

Wast Water (1).jpg

#1 Wast Water

Wast Water of course refers to the lake amongst the Western Fells - and it's a stunner - perhaps my favourite place in the world and it's extremely accessible (particularly good for those that may have mobility issues). The photographic opportunities are second to none and not just the lake itself. Be sure to check out the many woodlands and Fells that surround Wast Water. From the southern and western shores of the lake, you'll be greeted with some of the Lake District's most spectacular views looking back towards the mighty Great Gable.
