It seems that when I read other photographers’ back-stories, I always find them incredibly romantic. Perhaps they received their first camera at the age of 7, or maybe an old Polaroid was passed down from their father.

Unfortunately, I have no romantic story. Landscape photography has been a very gradual adventure. An adventure which began with travel.

Shortly after leaving university at 21, the idea of travel had harboured its way into my thoughts. Feeling apprehensive, I set out on a solo 6 week long trip through Europe. I named it; ‘Birmingham to Barcelona (via Bucharest)’. I had no camera, just my trusty iPhone 4 - but I vividly recall having photography as a companion. Snapshots, videos, memories. What a trip it was. Travel. I’d discovered my life’s passion, or had I?

After returning home, it was travel that consumed my thoughts. But next time, it needed to be something more… permanent. Not a trip or a holiday… I wanted to live abroad. That’s where Canada comes in.

I lived in Canada for almost 2 years, and it’s where I really started to fall for landscapes, and for photographing them. I drove from the East coast to the West coast… in the Canadian WINTER. Still equipped with only a smartphone, I look back now and there’s one photograph that springs to mind.

There’s not much to the image. Rather bland, wonky horizon, generally uninteresting and lacking in many things. But I recall the dancing, golden light in the foreground, the contrasts across the frozen waters, the hills and islands in the distance and most importantly, the awe I felt standing upon the shore. From memory, this was one of my first attempts at piecing together a photograph, rather than taking a snapshot. Arriving in Vancouver in January 2016, I purchased my first ever DSLR from Craigslist - a Nikon D3100.

So in 2016, the seed was well and truly planted. Next would come New Zealand in September - and of course, this is where the burning passion for landscape photography hit me square between the eyes. The YouTube channel was born, the Nikon D7200 was purchased and the marriage between ’adventure’ and ‘landscape photography’ became my ultimate passion.
